Rider position is close to attack mode think flat- backed and ready to hammer. That strange handlebar looks so wrong, yet feels so right. Haro’s decision to run the 27.5-inch wheels saves some weight over comparable 29-inch wheels and slightly lowers the bike’s center of gravity.Īside from the wheels, the Beasley keeps things simple: mechanical disc brakes, a single-speed drivetrain and the On One handlebar with the strangest bend of any bar we’ve ridden this year. The Beasley has adopted the ‘in-between’ mountain bike wheel size of 27.5 inches (falling between 29-inch and 26-inch wheels). The bent top tube gives the Beasley an excellent standover height. The bottom-bracket shell houses an eccentric bottom bracket that can be rotated to take up chain slack. The fork, made from chromoly, delivers zero inches of travel. No gussets are used in the frame construction, and a short strut strengthens the chainstay/seatstay junction just below the rear brake mount. Those little skinny frame tubes are double-butted 4130 chromoly. It is the second bike in your mountain bike collection. It is for those times when you need to see and feel the local trails from a totally new perspective. The Haro Beasley SS is a trailbike that can be pressed into service as an everyday commuter or Starbucks shuttler. Stripping away all the modern complexity, you are left with a bike that connects its rider to the trail like few mountain bikes made today. The Beasley, available as a single speed or in a $1300, nine-speed configuration, takes suspension technology and tosses it out the window. It is printed right there on the Haro Beasley’s bull-horned handlebar, and it sums up what this bike is all about. This is not the case with disc brakes.Wish we could say we came up with that catchy headline, but we didn’t. On a caliper brake, when the rim gets buckled (sideways movement from a bump), the braking performance gets affected, and if its wet, the brakes don’t work as well. They really shine where there’s a lot of climbing and descending required helping kids slow down without effort or really jamming the brakes on.

Mechanical disc brakes also feature on the Haro Beasley.ĭisc brakes deliver better stopping power and control. In our experience kids are like sponges and quickly adapt to using their hands to stop (but then, they kinda have to right?). For kids who haven’t used hand brakes - don’t stress. Worth pointing out is there are no foot brakes on the Beasley - only front and rear hand brakes. This is where kids grip and twist to change gears. The gears are controlled via a Shimano grip-shift mechanism. A single gear on the front is paired to 7 gears on the back. Unlike some kids bikes the Haro Beasley has a simplified gear system. It’s these smaller components which really make a difference to reduce the weight of a bike. This includes not just the major components - like the frame - but also fork, handlebar, stem, seatpost, rims and crankset. In order to make the Beasely as light as possible, a lot of the components sourced to build the bike are made from aluminium. This means better control of the bike at high speed and easier handling - a must for kids transitioning from a smaller bike to a larger one.Ī short stem, (slightly) wider bars and the slacker fork-angle deliver more control, especially over bumpy and rough surfaces. The Beasley’s low frame creates a low centre of gravity. The frame’s geometry and fit makes sense. Straight tubing lines with zero excess material. No untidy or excessive cables or components. In reality, it’s one one of the cleanest looking bikes in our range. The stock image above doesn’t really do the bike any justice. The Haro Beasley 24 girls bike must be on your shortlist of bikes to consider.
